On Saturday, March 18, we invite everyone, interested in Ukrainian literature and culture, to our event dedicated to the 209th anniversary of the Ukrainian poet and artist Taras Shevchenko.<\/p>\n<\/div>\n

Our event will begin with a lecture about how one person became the voice of the oppressed Ukrainian nation and woke it up with their own words. We will be talking about Shevchenko\u2019s crucial ideas and warnings addressed to his fellow compatriots, and why they sound so relevant to future generations, even two centuries later? Why, even in the 21st century, the Shevchenko monument became a target for Russian occupiers? Why is Taras so \u201cdangerous\u201d and \u201cundesirable\u201d for them even after his death? You will get to know about (un)read Shevchenko\u2013a passionate life-lover, an unbreakable fighter, and a devoted son of his beloved Ukraine\u2013and what lessons we can learn by reading his works.<\/div>\n

TOPIC: \u201cTaras Shevchenko\u2019s epistles to the future, or Why does the culture always matter?\u201d<\/p>\n

The speaker is Sofiia Fedzhora, a Fulbright Ukrainian language teaching assistant 2021-23 at the University of Washington (Seattle, WA) and a Ph.D. student at Taras Shevchenko National University of Kyiv (Ukraine).<\/p>\n<\/div>\n[\/et_pb_text][et_pb_text _builder_version=”4.20.2″ _module_preset=”default” theme_builder_area=”post_content” hover_enabled=”0″ sticky_enabled=”0″]

Following the lecture, we will have an art workshop called \u201cTaras Shevchenko Through the Eyes of Our Imagination\u201d lead by Luba Uzik. In this workshop, participants will be able to show their creative side and create a one of a kind art collage, inspired by the famous works of T. Shevchenko. During the workshop, we will also recite some of the poets most well known (and not so well know) poems and pieces of literature.<\/p>\n
